HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Southern Miss baseball team returns to action Tuesday night when they travel to Pearl, Miss., and Trustmark Park to face nationally ranked Ole Miss in a 6:30 p.m., contest.
The Golden Eagles (16-12) look to rebound after dropping two of three games at Rice over the weekend, while the Rebels (20-8) took two of three from No. 1 Florida in Oxford.
Southern Miss has won the last three and four of the last six meetings between the two clubs and the Golden Eagles are 4-2 versus Ole Miss in Pearl. Southern Miss also is 10-5 all-time in Trustmark Park dating back to 2006.
Travis Creel continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively as of late, having hit safely in the last nine games to raise his average to .284 on the year. During his hitting streak, Creel, a junior from Ocean Springs, Miss., is hitting .406 with three double, a home run and 10 runs batted in.
Freshman Mason Robbins continues to lead the team with a .358 batting average, while Kameron Brunty is at .341. Brunty returned to the lineup last week after missing 15 games with a hand injury. Fellow USM freshman Connor Barron ranks among the team's top hitters with a .316 mark, while senior Ashley Graeter has posted a .305 mark.
The Golden Eagles will send sophomore righthander Boomer Scarborough (1-0, 2.54 earned run average) to start on the mound for the fourth time in his career against the Rebels. The Pass Christian, Miss., native has yet to record a decision against Ole Miss in his three previous starts.
Ole Miss will counter with righthander Sam Smith (1-2, 4.32 ERA) to give the teams the same pitching matchup as the first meeting between the two teams this season.
Following the Ole Miss game, Southern Miss will utilize its off week in conference play by entertaining Alcorn State later this week. The two teams will play 6 p.m., games both Thursday and Friday and complete the series with a 2 p.m., Saturday contest.
