Southern Miss scored four runs in the eighth to rally for the second time in the contest in defeating the University of New Orleans 8-5 here Wednesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles are 3-1 on this current road swing and enter the contest with a 15-13 record, having won eight of their last 11 games. Southern Miss won its third consecutive C-USA series last weekend when they took two of three games from Florida Atlantic.
This will be the second meeting between the two clubs this season, although the first meeting was rained out at Pete Taylor Park in early March with the game being called in the bottom of the first. The Golden Eagles had scored five times in the frame before the game was delayed due to rain and lightning. After an hour delay, the game was officially cancelled.
The two teams have met on the diamond 98 times with Southern Miss holding a 50-48 advantage in the series dating back to the 1970 campaign. The Golden Eagles have won 11-straight in the series.
Junior designated hitter Matt Durst (Whitehouse, Texas) continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively with a .323 batting average, having hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games. Over that span, Durst is batting .367 (22-for-60) with two double, three home runs and 10 RBI. Michael Sterling, a junior from Meridian, Miss., is next with a .271 batting average, followed by sophomore Tim Lynch (Jupiter, Fla.) at .270.
Junior Bradley Roney (Wetumpka, Ala.), who adds a .253 batting average with a homer and five RBI, also has 13 1/3 innings in relief to his credit on the mound over 10 appearances with 20 strikeouts and just seven walks. Roney has posted a team-high eight saves and a 0.68 ERA, while not posting a record this season. He ranks No. 2 on the Golden Eagle career charts for saves with 26.
This season, Roney has highlighted a bullpen that has not allowed a run over the last four games, spanning 12 2/3 innings, and notching a 2.99 ERA overall this season in 99 1/3 innings of work.
The Golden Eagles will send sophomore right-hander Cody Carroll to the mound against the Privateers (8-17). Carroll is 1-0 in three starts this spring with a 1.23 ERA. He has fanned 14 and walked six with 10 hits over 14 2/3 innings.
UNO looks to counter with right-hander Raymond Winter (1-3, 4.74 ERA).
Following the UNO contest, Southern Miss finishes the six-game road swing at South Alabama on Wednesday. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
