HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Southern Miss junior first baseman Blake Brown (Semmes, Ala.) and junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce (Stringer, Miss.) were named the Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, Monday morning by the league office.
Pierce shared the pitching co-honors with Matthew Reckling of Rice.
Brown, who tallied a .353 batting average last week, hit safely in all four games last week and has notched at least one hit in eight of the last nine games. His hit total for last week includes hitting homers in three games to increase his team lead to six this season. He just missed a fourth home run against Ole Miss that banged off of the top of the wall in straight-away centerfield which instead went for a triple.
He now has a team-best 29 RBI on the year. His triple led to the first run at Ole Miss in the opening inning. Brown blasted a two-run homer to start the Golden Eagle 13-run frame on Saturday and his three-run homer against the Cougars in the final game of the series cut the gap in the contest to 10-5. Brown leads the team in RBI with 29.
It was the second league weekly honor this season for Brown.
Pierce made his first Friday start for the Golden Eagles and limited Houston to seven hits over seven innings.
He struck out a season-best 15 and did not allow a walk as the final 11 outs he recorded were punchouts. The strikeout total was the most ever by a Golden Eagle in a nine-inning game. Of the seven hits given up, only one was for extra bases (a double) as he stranded eight runners over the final five innings of work. Pierce added four flyouts and two groundouts.
He now has fanned a team-high 36 batters while walking four this season.
The Golden Eagles (14-10 overall, 2-1 C-USA) return to action Tuesday when they entertain Louisiana-Monroe in a 6 p.m., tilt at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
