HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss baseball has played well of late.
After sweeping then No. 23 Louisiana Tech over the weekend to open Conference USA play, the Golden Eagles upped their season record to 16-4 on the season, having won the last seven games.
That winning streak ranks as the program's longest since starting last season by capturing the first seven contests. The recent success for the Golden Eagles has enabled them to earn their first national ranking of the season this week, jumping into the Collegiate Baseball poll at No. 25.
Now, the Golden Eagles put that streak on the line when they travel to Pearl to take on Mississippi State (12-9) at Trustmark Park in a 6:30 p.m. Southern Miss will be the designated home team. The Golden Eagles are 3-5 against the Bulldogs at Trustmark Park, dating back to the two schools' first game there during the 2009 campaign.
Over this current win streak, Southern Miss holds a .328 team batting average with 20 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs, 62 runs and 55 RBI. Seven different players have driven in at least four runs over that span and eight players have posted at least a .300 batting average.
The team on the mound during this stretch holds the opposition to a .212 batting average as well as recording a 3.14 ERA with 63 strikeouts and just 25 walks and 49 hits over 63 innings.
Earlier Monday, junior right fielder Mason Irby collected the team's first C-USA Hitter of the Week honor of 2017 after helping the Golden Eagles to two wins over Columbia and then the series sweep at LA Tech.
Junior right-hander Taylor Braley gets the call for the Golden Eagles against the Bulldogs. In his last outing on March 8, Braley limited New Orleans to no runs on two hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts to garner the victory. The Hattiesburg native holds a 1-0 record this season with a 3.38 ERA.
Following the MSU contest, the Golden Eagles return home this weekend when they entertain Marshall in a C-USA series. The set starts Friday with a 6 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m., contest Saturday and an 11 a.m., affair to end the series on Sunday.
