HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team returns home this weekend to entertain Conference USA newcomer UTSA in a three-game weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The two teams will play at 6 p.m., this Friday, at 2 p.m., on Saturday and complete the series with a 1 p.m., contest on Sunday. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
It will be Pack the Pete in Pink Weekend with many festivities surrounded for the three games to build awareness regarding Breast Cancer as well as to help assist the Pink Ribbon Fund (PinkRibbonFund.org).
The Golden Eagles (10-11 overall, 2-1 C-USA) enter the weekend having won three of their last four games and are off an outing in which they tallied season highs for runs and hits (17) in an 18-2 home victory over ULM on Tuesday night.
Junior Matt Durst (Whitehouse, Texas) continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively with a .308 batting average with four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 16 runs batted in. Durst currently holds an eight-game hitting streak - the longest for the Golden Eagles this season - and is hitting .344 during this stretch.
With a 3-for-5 performance against ULM, junior Mason Robbins (Leakesville, Miss.) raised his average to .280 to go along with a team-best 18 RBI as he belt a grand slam in that contest. Junior Michael Sterling (Meridian, Miss.) follows Robbins with a .279 batting average, while sophomore Tim Lynch (Jupiter, Fla.) is at .270.
The Golden Eagles will face the Roadrunners (15-6, 2-1) for the first time in their baseball history.
In the series, Southern Miss intends to send a trio of right-handed pitchers. Junior Christian Talley (Diamondhead, Miss.) is scheduled to start on Friday, having posted a 0-1 record with a 2.18 earned run average in four starts. Golden Eagle senior Conor Fisk (Brown Deer, Wis.) should get the call on Saturday, after missing his turn last weekend with a high ankle sprain. Fisk has notched a 1-1 mark with a 3.20 ERA. In the finale, senior Cameron Giannini looks for this third-straight win having posted a 2-1 record with a 2.48 ERA in five starts.
The Roadrunners look to counter with right-hander Brock Hartson (1-0, 2.51 ERA) in the opener, southpaw Nolan Trabanino (4-0, 1.15 ERA) for the middle contest, and righty Justin Anderson (2-1, 2.48 ERA) in the finale.
Following the UTSA series, the Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday at Pearl, when they take on Ole Miss. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
