HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball returns to the road, Wednesday, to face Southeastern Conference foe Auburn in a 7 p.m., contest at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Ala.
The Golden Eagles (8-11) look to continue their winning ways after capturing the series finale from Central Arkansas, 2-1, last Sunday. It will be the first-ever game played for the Golden Eagles at the home of the Double A Mobile BayBears and the second of four games to be played by USM in minor league baseball stadiums this spring.
Auburn holds a 13-6 overall mark and 0-3 in SEC play, heading into a Tuesday night home game against Alabama State.
Southern Miss is expected to throw sophomore lefthander Jake Drehoff (0-3, 6.98) to start on the mound against the Tigers.
In last year's meeting between the two schools, the Golden Eagles captured their first victory in five meetings in the series, when they captured a 5-4 decision at Plainsman Park. Southern Miss strung together three straight doubles in the top of the eighth to score twice and break a 3-3 score. Bradley Roney then came in and retired all three batters in the ninth to help secure the victory.
Heading into the midweek game, senior Chase Fowler continues to lead Southern Miss in hitting with a .358 batting average, while sophomore catcher Austin Roussel is next at .346. Freshman first baseman/designated hitter Tim Lynch has posted a .324 batting clip, while senior second baseman holds a .310 mark to pace the Golden Eagle office.
Following this contest, the Golden Eagles return home this weekend to open Conference USA play when they take on perennial power Rice this weekend at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The series opens Friday night at 6 p.m., while Saturday takes place at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
The game can be heard only on WKZW-FM, 94.3 on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network, because of the men's basketball NIT game against Charleston Southern.
