HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team returns home this weekend to face nationally ranked Central Arkansas at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game times are set for 6 p.m., on Friday, and 1 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (7-9) face a Bear squad that boasts a 15-2 record and are ranked No. 30 by both Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Southern Miss looks to snap a three-game losing streak in the first meeting ever between the two schools in the sport of baseball.
Senior right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce brings in his 4-0 record and a 1.76 earned run average into the contest. The Stringer, Miss., native has fanned 35 batters in 30.2 innings, while allowing just two walks on the season. He has pitched at least 7 innings in all four starts this season including a complete-game victory over Louisiana-Lafayette last Friday.
Pierce will face UCA righthander Caleb McClanahan, who has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.05 ERA in the series opener.
In the Saturday contest, sophomore lefthander Jake Drehoff (0-2, 4.26 ERA) will be pitted against fellow southpaw Jeffery Enloe (3-0, 2.86 ERA). The finale sports Golden Eagle junior righty Conor Fisk (0-1, 0.00 ERA) against Bear righthander Bryce Biggerstaff (2-0, 2.25 ERA) on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles posted their fifth double-digit hit night against Mississippi State on Tuesday in Pearl, including a three-hit performance from Chase Fowler. Fowler leads the club in batting with a .419 average with three doubles, a triple and 10 RBI.
Freshman Tim Lynch holds down second on the team in hitting with a .375 batting mark as he has four doubles, a triple and a team-high tying 12 RBI, while sophomore Austin Roussel is at .368 and senior Isaac Rodriguez at .311.
Senior Blake Brown, who had two hits against MSU earlier this week, sports the current team-best hitting streak at 10 games to post a .291 batting mark this year.
Following the weekend series, the Golden Eagles take to the road during the midweek as they travel to Mobile, Ala., next Wed., Mar. 20, to face Auburn at Hank Aaron Stadium, the home of the Class AA Mobile BayBears.
