HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team plays its last midweek contest against Tulane on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. before opening up Conference USA play at The Pete this weekend.
The Golden Eagles (11-4) travel to New Orleans after sweeping Georgia Southern at home over the weekend and outscoring the Eagles 15-7.
Friday night’s heroics saw Hunter Slater hit a walk-off single to left field in the bottom of the 10th to drive in the winning run to take the first game of the series 4-3. Matt Wallner followed in like fashion hitting his first home run of the season in the bottom of the 9th to take the series with a 3-2 win. Southern Miss saw double-digit hits for the first time in four games, totaling 11 hits in Game 2 of Saturday’s double header 8-2 win to sweep Georgia Southern.
Both Nick Sandlin and Stevie Powers reached double-digit strikeout figures in each appearance over the weekend. Sandlin boasted a seven-inning outing with 12 strikeouts while Powers followed close behind with 6 1/3 innings, striking out 10. The Golden Eagles remain in the Top 25 list in the national rankings after Baseball America kept Southern Miss at the No. 15 spot, D1 Baseball’s No. 16 spot, Perfect Game’s No. 17 spot and moved up one position in Collegiate Baseball’s No. 23 spot.
Tulane currently sits at 8-8 on the season and host UL-Lafayette Tuesday night before Southern Miss comes to town. The Green Wave went 2-3 last week, earning its wins against Purdue in a weekend series.
Tulane travels to Hattiesburg on May 1 for the second game of the home-and-home series. The Golden Eagles went 1-1 last season against the Green Wave having won the home contest 2-1 but dropping the second 10-8.
Sophomore right-hander Walker Powell (0-1, 6.30 ERA) gets his fourth-straight midweek start for Southern Miss on Wednesday night. Junior third baseman Luke Reynolds continues to lead the Golden Eagles on offense in runs scored (22), hits (24), doubles (7), home runs (4) and RBI (19). Matthew Guidry and Daniel Keating each have hit two home runs this season and have totaled 27 hits combined.
Southern Miss returns home Friday at 6 p.m. for its first Conference USA series against UTSA. UTSA sits 7-7 on the season before hosting Texas State at home on Tuesday night.
