HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team completes a five-game road swing Wednesday night when they travel to Alabama for a 6 p.m. contest at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (8-3) hold a 3-1 mark on the current road stretch that saw them win two of three games over the weekend in the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Fla.
The team’s solid week helped them stay in the national rankings. This week, Southern Miss holds a No. 15 spot by Baseball America, while also sporting a No. 16 ranking by both D1Baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association along with a No. 24 poll spot by Collegiate Baseball.
Southern Miss plays an Alabama squad that has raced out to a 10-2 record. The Crimson Tide won their first nine contests to start the year, before losing two of three over the weekend to Oklahoma.
This will be the only meeting between the two clubs this season and the second-straight year that the Golden Eagles travel to Tuscaloosa. The Golden Eagles lost last year’s meeting 12-5, but have won nine of the last 15 games in the series.
Sophomore right-hander Walker Powell (0-0, 6.43 ERA) gets the nod for his third-straight midweek start, while Alabama will counter with redshirt freshman Garret Rukes (1-0, 0.00).
Junior Luke Reynolds continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively with a .432 average, while also leading them in runs scored (19), hits (19), doubles (6), home runs (4) and RBI (18). Redshirt freshman Gabe Montenegro ranks next with a .412 batting average, while Hunter Slater is third at .391 with 13 RBI.
Following the Alabama contest, the Golden Eagles return home this weekend to face Georgia Southern in its final non-conference weekend series of the season. The two teams play single games Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
