Eagles Three-Hit Troy to Win Series in 8-1 Triumph
It was solid pitching for Southern Miss for the second consecutive day with four Golden Eagle pitchers limiting Troy to four hits in an 8-1 victory here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The No. 24 ranked Southern Miss baseball team returns to action this weekend when they travel to the state of Alabama to face Troy in a three-game, non-conference series at Riddle-Pace Field.
Game times are 6 p.m., for Friday's contest, while the Saturday and Sunday tilts are set for 1 p.m., starts. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network with flagship station 94.3 (WKZW-FM) in Hattiesburg/Laurel.
This weekend's series gives the Golden Eagles (5-3) a chance to rebound from a 6-5 midweek loss at ULM. Southern Miss tied a season-high for hits in the contest with 15, but left 13 runners stranded on base as a two-run homer in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the Warhawks proved to be the difference in ULM's come-from-behind victory.
Heading into the Troy series, four Golden Eagles - with at least 10 at bats this season - post a .300 batting average or better through the first eight games. Senior catcher Chase Fowler leads the way for Southern Miss with a .421 batting mark on the strength of a current team-high tying six-game hitting streak to go along with six RBI on the campaign.
Freshman Tim Lynch is next for Southern Miss, who has also hit in six-straight games, with a .391 batting mark to go along with a double and six RBI. Senior Isaac Rodriguez holds a .367 batting mark with a team-high five doubles and four RBI, while sophomore Andrew Furr is hitting .300 with four RBI.
The Golden Eagles plan to stay with the same rotation that they have utilized the first two weekends of the regular season when they face the Trojans.
Senior righthander Andrew Pierce gets the nod in the opener. Pierce, who has lasted at least seven innings in each of his first two starts in 2013, has posted a 2-0 mark with a 0.63 ERA. He has fanned 14 in 14 1/3 innings while having walked just one batter. He will face right-handed pitcher Will Starling (2-0, 2.25 ERA) in the series opener.
The middle game sees sophomore lefty Jake Drehoff towing the mound for the Golden Eagles. His 2013 numbers include a 0-1 record with a 2.79 ERA. Troy looks to counter Drehoff with a southpaw of its own, Shane McCain (1-1, 4.50 ERA).
In the finale, dual threat Mason Robbins, a lefthander, is the scheduled starter as he has posted a 1-0 record with a 1.50 ERA. Robbins faces Trojans right-handed hurler Tanner Hicks (1-0, 4.50 ERA) in the finale.
Following the Troy series, the Golden Eagles finish their longest road swing of the regular season next Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m., contest at South Alabama.
