Creel Powers Eagles Past ULM Tuesday Night
Southern Miss third baseman Travis Creel tallied a career-best three hits and drove in three runs to lead Southern Miss to a 7-5 non-conference baseball victory over
Louisiana-Monroe here Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The team looks to continue building off its season-high 15-hit total in Sunday's 7-2 win over Alcorn State as this will be the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Warhawks are slated to come to Pete Taylor Park on Apr. 30.
The two teams split a pair of meetings a year ago with ULM winning in Monroe 2-1, and the Golden Eagles taking a 7-5 decision in Hattiesburg.
During the early going this season, several Golden Eagles have been swinging the bat well including catchers, senior Chase Fowler and sophomore Austin Roussel, which have combined to hit .500 through the first seven games with Roussel recording four hits in seven at bats with three RBI, while Fowler has posted a .467 batting average with six RBI.
Fowler, along with Lynch and senior Isaac Rodriguez, each hold the current team lead for current hitting streak at five games. Rodriguez, who leads the squad with five doubles, holds a .423 batting average with four RBI, while Lynch is hitting at a .389 clip with five RBI.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Jake Winston gets his second mid-week start for the Eagles, after allowing just one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk in his debut last Tuesday at Alabama. He will be matched up against redshirt-senior Andrew Richardson for ULM (4-3), who has not posted a record but has a 12.00 ERA heading into the contest.
Following the trip to Monroe, the Golden Eagles travel to Troy this weekend for a three-game set, before finishing the swing the following Wednesday at South Alabama. The Golden Eagles and Trojans will play at 6 p.m., on Friday, along with 1 p.m., start times for single games on both Saturday and Sunday. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network with flagship station WZKW-FM, 94.3 in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area.
