Dual Role Robbins Leads Eagles over Alcorn State
Mason Robbins tossed six strong inning and added four hits and two runs batted in to lead Southern Miss past Alcorn State 7-2 here Sunday afternoon in the final day of the USM Invitational here at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 25, when they entertain Alcorn State in a 6 p.m., contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The game continues an eight-game homestand for the Golden Eagles (2-5), who also play Alabama at home on Wednesday, before finishing the stretch with a three-game set with Troy at The Pete this weekend. The ASU contest has been designated Family Night, giving fans the ability to purchase four general admission seats good for $20. The offer is only available at SouthernMissTickets.com.
Three first-year players lead the Golden Eagles offensively through the first seven games. Junior designated hitter Joey Harris (Gulfport, Miss.) holds the best batting average at .333 with a double and two runs batted in. Freshman first baseman Dylan Burdeaux (West Monroe, La.) is next at .318, having hit safely in each of his last four games, and now has two doubles, a triple and four RBI on the year.
Junior transfer and catcher, Matt Durst (Whitehouse, Texas), has posted a .308 batting mark with three doubles, one triple and seven RBI. Returning rightfielder Mason Robbins (Leakesville, Miss.) has a team-high nine hits with a .290 batting mark to go along with three doubles and six RBI.
This game marks the 17th meeting between Southern Miss and Alcorn State which dates back to the 1985 season and the Golden Eagles having won 15 of those meetings. Scott Berry's club defeated the Braves 7-2 last season in the final game of the Southern Miss Invitational in February.
The Braves are 0-8 to start the season, after dropping a three-game series at Arizona last weekend. Southern Miss also looks to snap back after dropping a three-game set to Louisiana-Lafayette to start the home portion of the slate.
