Eagles Fall in Series Finale to UL Lafayette 9-1
Tyler Girouard collected four hits and drove in three runs to lead Louisiana-Lafayette to a 9-1 non-conference baseball victory over Southern Miss here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team opens the home portion of its 2014 season this weekend when they entertain Louisiana-Lafayette for a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (2-2) enter the weekend on a good note, having collected a season-high for both runs and hits in a 14-2 win at ULM on Tuesday night. Every Southern Miss position player starter collected at least one hit and one RBI in the contest as the team won at Monroe for the first time since 2010.
Sophomore second baseman Nick Dawson (Bartlett, Tenn.) and junior Joey Harris (Gulfport, Miss.) leads the Golden Eagles offensively through the first four games with .429 batting averages, respectively. Junior rightfielder Mason Robbins (Leakesville, Miss.) is next at .389 with a team-best six RBI and a four-game hitting streak to start the season. Junior centerfielder Connor Barron (Hattiesburg, Miss.) also has enjoyed a nice start with a .313 batting mark to go along with a homer and three RBI.
Southern Miss expects to send senior righthander Conor Fisk (Brown Deer, Wis.) to the mound in the series opener for his first outing of the year. Fisk finished with a 4-3 record a season ago with a 3.23 earned run average. The Golden Eagles will then use senior righty Cameron Giannini as its starting pitching in Saturday's contest. Giannini, who made the first start of his Golden Eagle career last Saturday against Missouri, threw 5 2/3 innings and retired 14 Tigers in a row at one point. He also notched a career-best nine strikeouts in the contest but did not collect a decision.
Southern Miss is undecided on its starter for the series finale at this time.
The Ragin' Cajuns are 4-1 to start the season after taking three of four games from Eastern Illinois last weekend and then collecting a 5-3 victory over Northwestern State Wednesday night.
The two teams have met 40 times on the diamond with the Cajuns holding a 21-19 advantage in a series that dates back to the 1929 campaign. The Golden Eagles are looking for their first series win since the 2012 campaign in Lafayette.
The UL series opens a string of eight consecutive games for the Golden Eagles at home. Following this weekend's set, Southern Miss entertains Alcorn State (Tues., Feb. 25) and Alabama (Wed., Feb. 26) during the midweek, before holding a weekend slate against Troy (Feb. 28-March 2).
