The Golden Eagles are 3-0 to start the season after sweeping Southeastern Conference foe Missouri over the weekend. The sweep helped bolster the Golden Eagles showing in the different baseball polls including a six-spot jump by Collegiate Baseball to No. 30 and a move up two places to No. 21 by Baseball America.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association now has Southern Miss at No. 28, up four spots, while the program moved into the PerfectGame.org Top 25 at No. 23.
Southern Miss enters the Alabama game having won five-straight contests dating back to last season's Conference USA Tournament. The program has enjoyed some recent success against the Crimson Tide, having won five of the last eight meetings. The teams split last year's two-game series with the Golden Eagles winning 14-2 in Hattiesburg, but dropping an 8-3 decision in Tuscaloosa. Alabama holds a 3-0 mark as well, having swept VMI at home last weekend.
Against the Crimson Tide, the Golden Eagles are expected to throw freshman right-handed pitcher Jake Winston (Vidalia, La.) in his first collegiate appearance. He will be countered by the Tide's sophomore lefty Taylor Guilbeau, who threw a scoreless inning last weekend in relief.
The Golden Eagles have been able to get off to its nice start thanks to late-inning heroics which garnered their first opening weekend sweep of an opponent since 2011. The squad has produced 11 of its 16 runs over the first three games in the seventh inning or later which included a three-run, go-ahead homer by Mason Robbins on Saturday and a six-run eighth in the finale.
In addition, the pitching staff fanned 28 Tiger hitters in 27 innings of work, and walked just eight as the squad posted a 1.33 earned run average over the weekend. USM's relievers allowed just a run on four hits over 8 2/3 frames with 12 strikeouts and just three walks to complement a fine trio of starts from Andrew Pierce, Jake Drehoff and Robbins.
Following the Alabama contest, the Golden Eagles return home for the Southern Miss Invitational which is set to run from Friday through Sunday. Missouri State, an NCAA Tournament participant from last season, Eastern Illinois and Alcorn State will play at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
