Southern Miss renews a rivalry with the Warhawks that dates back to the 1949 season with the Golden Eagles holding a 44-18 advantage. ULM captured the only meeting between the two teams a year ago, 6-5, in Monroe, as the other scheduled game in Hattiesburg was canceled due to rain.
Junior rightfielder Mason Robbins (Leakesville, Miss.) leads the way for the Golden Eagles offensively after the first three contests with a .462 batting average to go along with three doubles and five RBI. Sophomore second baseman Nick Dawson (Bartlett, Tenn.) is next at .444 while junior shortstop Michael Sterling (Meridian, Miss.) has put together a solid .286 batting average. Senior left-handed pitcher A.J. Glasshof (Sugar Land, Texas) gets the call on the mound for the Golden Eagles against the Warhawks. He produced a 1-2 mark a year ago with a 2.89 earned run average in 12 appearances which included four starts in his initial season with the program.
ULM has started 2-1, having taken two of three games from Grand Canyon at home over the weekend. The Warhawks plan to throw redshirt freshman righthander Josh Leone against the Golden Eagles. Leone appeared once in relief last weekend and allowed a run on two hits with a walk and five strikeouts in a four-inning relief stint.
Following the ULM contest, Southern Miss finally opens its home schedule with a three-game weekend series against Louisiana-Lafayette. The set begins Friday, Feb. 21 with a 6 p.m., game, following by single contests starting at 1 p.m., on both Saturday and Sunday.
