HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team garnered a No. 23 preseason ranking from the publication Baseball America on Thursday.
Southern Miss returns seven starters and all of its weekend pitching rotation from a season ago in which the Golden Eagles finished 32-24. The program represents one of two Conference USA schools in the publication's Top 25 with Rice holding a No. 18 ranking.
The squad also garnered a No. 36 ranked in the preseason Top 40 poll by Collegiate Baseball, which was released last month. Southern Miss works toward reaching its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance all-time this spring and its 10 berth in the last 11 seasons.
The Golden Eagles officially begin practice on Friday and then play host to the fourth annual Fan Day celebration, Saturday, Jan. 26, at Pete Taylor Park.
The day starts with a 10 a.m., free baseball clinic for kids ages 4 through 13, with instruction provided by Southern Miss players and coaches. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., for the free camp. At 11:30 a.m., fans will have the opportunity to meet the entire 2013 squad and coaching staff during an autograph session, followed by a 2 p.m., nine-inning, intra-squad scrimmage.
