HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team begins formal preparations for the 2014 season when the squad opens practice Friday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Southern Miss plays a 2014 schedule that features 29 home games, and also includes 11 different teams that reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The campaign opens with a three-game series against 2012 College World Series participant, Stony Brook, Fri., Feb. 14, in a 4 p.m., contest.
"We are just excited to get everybody back together as a team as we prepare for our first game in three weeks," said fifth-year Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry. "It has been over two and a half months since we have been out there together, so we are look forward to getting everybody back out there together and getting on the same page."
The Golden Eagles, which captured their second Conference USA regular season championship in the last three seasons in 2013, return 25 letterwinners from a season ago, including 13 pitchers and four position player starters.
Headlining the returnees is junior outfielder Mason Robbins (Leakesville, Miss.), who batted .317 with two home runs and 40 runs batted in a season ago. Also back is two-way player Bradley Roney, who will play third base and pitch. The Wetumpka, Ala., native hit. 250 last season with three homers and 20 RBI, while posting a 1-0 pitching mark with seven saves as the closer.

Practices typically begin at 2:30 p.m., weekdays and the public is invited to attend.
