Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Head Coach Scott Berry
Opening Statement...
"It was a hard-fought game by both clubs. I think that's what people wanted to see there - the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds going at it and we did for 11 innings. Hats off to Rice; they're an outstanding club. I'm very proud of our guys and the way we competed to get out of some jams, turn some double plays and I just feel like we never quit. We felt like we were there grinding it out, trying to get a win and that's what I'm proud of."

On Andrew Pierce and the bullpen...
"They gave us an opportunity. When we did have runners in scoring position - and it wasn't many - we didn't get that two-out hit to get them in. So, hats off to Rice's guy who came out of the pen and really just neutralized the game."

On walking 11 batters, including the tying run in the seventh inning...
"That's what innings are built on - walks, hit batters and errors - and today that's what we saw."

On the season...
"We were 11-17 at one point, and to finish at 30-27, and co-champs in the conference and to take it 11 innings in the conference championship game, I was very, very proud. We dug ourselves a hole really deep early and for us to climb out of that and continue to fight, I feel like we had two ways to go. We could continue on the road we were, which was losing, or we could change it, and that's what we did. Our seniors really stepped it up for us and turned the thing around and going in the right direction. They got us where we are today."

Head Coach Wayne Graham
Opening Statement...
"We played one of our worst defensive games of the year, but it shows the kind of tenacity we've got - particularly the pitching staff. Zech Lemond hadn't thrown near that many pitches anytime this year and he hung in there and kept us in the game. I thought he did an incredible job. And of course (Keenan) Cook; he's been delivering all year. Cook's been doing that kind of work all year."

On getting the automatic NCAA Tournament bid...
"I can sleep tonight. Otherwise I was going to have a fitful night. We never know, the world can shift. We certainly deserve a bid regardless, but I don't like to have to sleep on it and worry about it."

On reliever Zech Lemond...
"I didn't think we'd have him throw that many pitches. I think he ended up around 80, but I think he may be a starter next year, so that shouldn't be a real problem for him."

On starting pitcher Jordan Stephens...
"I wanted to get three innings from him and he did that. We didn't have Blake (Fox); he wasn't his usual self or Zech wouldn't have pitched as much. Blake was a little off, but will be effective in the playoffs for sure."

On what it means...
"This one was maybe harder because of the way the bats and the balls are. I saw where North Carolina and North Carolina State played 17 innings last night. Every game seems like it can goeither way. It's inches, so you're proud when your guys hang in there and win the inches."

Keenan Cook
On his game-winning hit in the 11th inning...
"I was just thinking this is a great opportunity and I believe in myself and knew he was going to come at me with the first pitch and I was ready for it."

On coming through late in a tie game...
"We knew it wasn't going to be easy and it certainly wasn't. But we kept grinding, battling at the plate and the pitching was just phenomenal. And we came away with a victory."

On getting hot at the right time...
"These last nine games, 9-0. It's the perfect time to get on a roll so we're thankful for that. It's been a year full of tough times but we're coming together now and it's the perfect time for it."

Zech Lemond
On winning the tournament title...
"It feels good. I like to win and so does everyone else, so it's enjoyable."

On if he knew he would be pitching so much today...
"No, [Jordan Stephens] just gave us me idea. He said he was going to go four and I was going to five innings. I kind of had my mind set on going deep. Then when Blake (Fox) got in the mix, I didn't really hear about that, so I was just ready for anything, really."

On the dugout's reaction to the game-winning hit...
"It was just pure excitement for sure."

On the team playing welllate in the season...
"We picked up good and our bats are starting to get hot at a good time of the season which is late and in the postseason so hopefully we'll continue to hit the ball."

Christian Stringer
On winning a conference championship...
"You don't want to leave this place with a loss. To come out with a great, exciting win like that to win a conference championship. It's so much fun with a great group of guys. Keenan Cook getting that big hit, he wants it just as bad as the next person so I was proud of him. It's a great guy to get that hit."

On the nature of the game...
"We knew it was going to be a dogfight coming into it. Southern Miss is a great team, they have alot of heart, they were fighting for a playoff berth and we got up early and it was 3-0, and they scratched their way back, they found a way to get some runs and it was a great job by Zech Lemond to hold us in there the whole game. It was a dogfight until the end with the six scoreless innings that we had. Just to come out with a win in extra innings like that is a great time. It makes it so much better."

On coming back from down 4-3 in the seventh inning...
"We could have hung our heads when we got down a run, but we definitely didn't. We scratched and battled our way back, found a way to get another run across and played some great defense. We had some shaky defense, but we made the plays when we needed to and came out with a win."
