It tool over 19 hours for Memphis to defeat Southern Miss 10-8 at Pete Taylor Park in a game that started on Friday evening and was finished on Saturday afternoon because weather forced the postponement in the seventh inning on Friday.
The game was halted in the seventh with Memphis ahead 5-3 and the bats game out hot for both teams when the games resumed. Memphis scored three runs in the seventh and Southern Miss answered with two then the Tigers scored two in the ninth and Southern Miss scored three.
Vollmuth had the big blow in the ninth inning with a three-run home run to pull Southern Miss within two, but that was as close as they would get.
Freshman Dillon Day had three hits and two RBI in the game to lead the offense.
Freshman Geoffrey Thomas threw well over his 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four though he did suffer the loss.
Southern Miss opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with three unearned runs. Taylor Walker started the rally with a single and B.A. Vollmuth hit at should have been an inning ending double play, but Memphis second baseman Adam McClain kicked the ball allowing both runners to advance. Adam Doleac delivered a RBI single through the right side. After Mark Ellis drew a walk Dillon Day laced a two RBI triple down the right field line to put Southern Miss up 3-0.
Memphis cracked the board for the first time in the top of the fifth inning as Chad Zurcher hit a deep fly ball that fell in the right center gap allowing a run to score, cutting the Southern Miss lead to 3-1.
The Tigers rallied to tie the game in the top of the sixth after Thomas allowed a walk and a perfect hit and run single to put runners on the corners before Heath Hatfield hit a double just inside the third base bad to tie the game at three and end the day for Thomas.
The big inning continued for Memphis as Shawn Albett lined a RBI single into right field and Drew Martinez hit a sacrifice fly off Jay Myrick to put the Tigers 5-3.
After over a 16 hour delay Memphis' first two hitters reached base on a single and double, with Adam McClain's double knocking in a run. The Tigers added two more runs on a line drive hit right at Vollmuth that hit off his glove into centerfield to make the score 8-3.
Southern Miss took advantage of two Memphis errors to add two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Koelling and Kameron Brunty started the inning with back-to-back singles then Memphis' Jacob Wilson made back-to-back errors at third base to allow both runners to score.
Memphis added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning as Heath Hartfield knocked in a run with a RBI single and Shawn Albett plated a run with RBI double to make the score 10-5.
The Golden Eagles attempted to rally in the bottom of the ninth inning as Tyler Koelling and Taylor Walker reached base before Vollmuth blasted his 15th home run of the season to cut the Memphis lead down to two.
