BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Keith DePew drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to drive in the game-winning run in lifting UAB to a 2-1 Conference USA baseball victory here Thursday night over Southern Miss at Young Memorial Field.
The Golden Eagles (28-23 overall, 12-10 C-USA) had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time to the Blazers in the last five games. Andrew Pierce for Southern Miss and Michael Busby of UAB battled in a pitchers' duel with the Blazer righthander getting the victory.
Pierce went seven innings and allowed a run on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts to not record a decision, while Busby went eight-plus innings and allowed a run on five hits with four strikeouts to get the victory and improve to 4-4.
The Blazers drew four walks in the bottom of the eighth, two coming from James McMahon and a pair from Chase Horn with the latter giving a walk to DePew to determine the contest. McMahon (2-1) got tagged with the loss.
The Golden Eagles got a leadoff single by Ashley Graeter in the ninth, but Dillon Napoleon came in a retired the side to collect his first save of the year.
The Blazers (29-25, 9-13) got their only tally off of Pierce in the fifth. With one out, Ryan Prinzing singled up the middle and scored one batter later when John Frost doubled with a hit just inside the bag at third which rolled all the way down into the corner.
Southern Miss tied the score in the top of the seventh. Graeter, who had three of the five hits for the Golden Eagles, notched a double off the left-centerfield wall. Blake Brown then tripled to left-center three batters later to tie the score.
Game two of the series is set for 6:30 p.m., Friday.
