B.A. Vollmuth recorded a two-run single in the top of the ninth to lead Southern Miss to a 6-5 come-from-behind Conference USA victory over Houston here Friday night at Cougar Field.
The Golden Eagles (37-11 overall, 15-4 C-USA) scored five runs over the final two innings and overcame two deficits down the stretch to garner their fifth win in a row.
Down 4-3 in the final inning, Vollmuth came up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. The junior from Biloxi, Miss., then hit a Jordan Mannisto pitch just past a diving Ryan Still at second base up the middle to put the Golden Eagles ahead.
With runners at the corners, the Golden Eagles then ran a double steal which Mannisto tried to field on the throw down to second and the ball kicked off his glove to allow Kameron Brunty to score.
The bottom of the ninth proved to be an adventure for the Eagles as Cargill gave up a single and a walk before M.P. Cokinos bunted one back to the pitcher who threw wide of third and allowed a run to score and cut the gap to one run.
With runners at second and third, pinch hitter Travis Trial was intentionally
walked. Cargill then recorded a strikeout and got UH to hit into consecutive
fielder's choices to end the contest.
The game was scoreless through the first four frames, before Southern Miss garnered a run in the fifth on a RBI single from Brunty.
UH then took the lead with two runs in the sixth on a groundout and a RBI single.
In the eighth, Marc Bourgeois tied the game with a run-scoring single and then the visitors went ahead when Adam Doleac hit a ball to first that was misplayed to give the Golden Eagles a 4-3 advantage.
The Cougars (22-27, 9-10) retook the lead in the eighth on a RBI double from Chase Jensen and then went ahead with a run due to a throwing error by Ashley Graeter.
Cargill (6-3) threw the final 1 1/3 for the Eagles to get the victory as he allowed a run on a hit with a pair of walks and a strikeout. Mannisto (3-3) threw the final two innings for the Cougars and allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The two teams continue the series with a 6:30 p.m., contest Saturday.
