Baseball Completes Come From Behind Victory, Wins 11-10 Thriller In 11 Innings

Down 8-1 to East Carolina entering the bottom of the third inning, the Southern Miss Golden Eagle baseball team chipped away at the Pirate lead, eventually tying the game on a two-RBI single by Drew Carson in the bottom of the ninth, before Kevin Coker scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th on a wild pitch, before 2,861 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field tonight.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 32-16 overall, 8-8 in Conference USA. East Carolina falls to 28-18, 7-9 in league play. It was the first Friday night Conference USA since winning the opening Friday game against UAB on March 24.
"It was the best come back win of the year," Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer said. "It was a big win. It thought we played like some of the Southern Miss teams of the past. I hadn't seen this kind of come back this year. We need to get out of the gate a little better. "I thought both teams competed very hard. This series is very important."
East Carolina took the first lead of the ball game on a one-out home run by Dale Mollenhauer.
The Pirates extended their lead out to 6-0 with five runs in the second. With one out, Wood walked, advancing to second on a single by Brandon Henderson. Wood then scored on a RBI single by Jake Dean. Ryan Tousley then walked to load the bases, which resulted in a pitching chance to Bryan Adams. Harrison Eldridge then singled, scoring Wood, which also kept the bases loaded. Adams then struck out Dale Mollenhauer for the second out, before Jake Smith connected on a two RBI single, before Eldridge scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Southern Miss made the score 6-1 in the bottom of the second, on a solo home run by Jody Blount, his seventh of the year.
East Carolina make the score 8-1 in the top of the third, on a two-RBI single up the middle by Tousley.
The Golden Eagles got closer in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 8-8-7 on a RBI sacrifice fly to left by Davis, scoring Carson, who reached on a fielding error by Pirate first baseman Adam Witter, advancing to second on the play, before being sacrificed to third on a bunt by Michael Ewing.
East Carolina re-took a two-run advantage in the top of the seventh, as Jay Mattox, who reached on a fielding error by Golden Eagle shortstop Brian Dozier, scored on a wild pitch.
Southern Miss make the score 9-8 in the bottom of the eighth. After Davis reached on a bunt single, he went to second on a wild pitch, before scoring on a base hit up the middle by Brian Dozier.
East Carolina got an insurance run in the top of the ninth, on a RBI single by pinch hitter Adam Hodges.
But Southern Miss tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Toddric Johnson walked to start the inning, advancing to second as Jody Blount was hit by a pitch. Both players went to third and second on a sacrifice bunt by Coker, before Carson singled into left, the game.
East Carolina threatened in the 10th, but left two runners stranded.
Southern Miss then won the game in the 11th. Coker singled through the left side, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt but Coker. Following a Pirate pitching change to Chris Powell, Coker went to third on a balk, before scoring on a wild pitch, ending the game.
Daniel Best (5-1) got the win for Southern Miss, working the final 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and no runs, walking one and striking out two.
Powell (0-2) took the loss, pitching 0.1 innings, striking out one.
Maddox finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Davis also had three RBIs for Southern Miss.
Jake Smith finished with three hits to lead East Carolina.
Saturday's game is set for a 4 p.m., start.
