NEW ORLEANS - Tyler Mapes threw a six-hit shutout as Tulane defeated Southern Miss 3-0 here Sunday afternoon at Turchin Stadium at Greer Field to win a Conference USA baseball series over the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss (28-21 overall, 15-9 C-USA) fell to third place in the league standings after losing back-to-back games for only the second time since early March.
The Green Wave (20-25, 8-14) scored solo runs in each of the first two innings off of Golden Eagle starter Cody Carroll.
Andrew Garner drove in the first run with a single in opening frame and Stephen Alemais added an RBI single of his own in the second to give the Green Wave a 2-0 advantage.
Tulane finished its scoring with a sacrifice bunt in the sixth by Richard Carthon.
Mapes struck out five and walked just two as he helped strand 10 Golden Eagle base runners to get the victory and improve to 5-4 on the season. Offensively, the Green Wave added 11 hits, including three from Jake Rogers, and two each from Garrett Deschamp, Grant Brown and Hunter Hope.
Carroll went five-plus innings and allowed all three runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-1. Bradley Roney threw the final three frames and gave up just three hits with a strikeout.
Southern Miss left at least one runner on base in each of the first five innings, and stranded the bases loaded in the fourth.
The Golden Eagles return to action next weekend when they entertain East Carolina in the squad's final regular-season home contests.
