CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Marshall's Adam Frederick hit a solo blast over the right center field wall in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Thundering Herd to a 6-3 victory over Southern Miss, tonight, at Appalachian Power Park in front of 189.
Jeremy Sloane (3-4) won his third game of the season, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out six. Brian Knippelmeyer (5) picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit and striking out four. Jonathan Johnston (0-1) dropped his first decision of the season, giving up one run on four hits and striking out three in four innings of relief.
Marshall (19-19, 6-10 Conference USA) scored six runs on 11 hits and committed two errors, while Southern Miss (29-16, 5-8 C-USA) scored three runs on nine hits and committed one error.
Chris Monaco finished with three hits to lead Marshall, including a triple. Frederick and Russell each finished with two hits for the Herd.
With Marshall leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Thundering Herd scored three runs to increase their lead to 6-2. Brit Vincent hit a one-out single up the middle and scored when Adam Ptacek doubled down the left field line. Back-to-back singles by Monaco and Frederick scored Ptacek and an infield single to second scored Monaco for the third run of the inning.
Toddric Johnson blasted a two-out homer to right center to cut the margin to three runs, 6-3, the final outcome.
Marshall took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chris Monaco tripled to right field and scored on a bases loaded walk to Brendan Murphy. Adam Frederick walked and scored on Brent Mason's fielder's choice.
Southern Miss scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 2-2. Trey Sutton led off the third inning with a single to left field, moved to second on Bo Davis' ground out to second, advanced to third on Toddric Johnson's ground out to second and scored on Marc Maddox's single through the middle.
Kevin Coker led off the fourth inning with a double to center field, moved to third on Luke Adkins single through the left side and scored on Jody Blount's single up the middle.
Marshall and Southern Miss play the second game of the three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m.
