Bowden Pitches Baseball To Series Win With 5-1 Victory in Game Two of Weekend Series

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Southern Miss' Barry Bowden pitched his second complete-game of the season, pitching a career-high nine innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out seven batters to lead the Golden Eagles to a 5-1 victory over East Carolina, tonight, at Clark-LeClair Stadium in front of 3,405 in attendance.

Bowden (5-3) won his fifth game of the season, including the last four-straight starts. After giving up the two-out solo home run in the first inning, he retired the next five- straight batters, before giving up two-straight singles in the third inning. He sat down the next three, gave up a single in the fourth inning, retired the next six batters, before hitting a batter. He finished the game retiring 11 of the final 12 batters, including seven straight.

With today's win, Southern Miss wins it first series over East Carolina in Greenville, after posting 1-2 records in 2003 and 2005. The Golden Eagles also have won five in a row over the Pirates since the 2006 season.

Dustin Sasser (5-3) was credited with the loss for the Pirates, pitching five innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits, walking three and striking out three batters. Chris Powell gave up a hit in three innings, walking one and striking out four batters. Mike Flye pitched the ninth inning, giving up a walk and striking out a batter.

Southern Miss (27-18, 8-9 C-USA) scored five runs on nine hits and committed an error, while East Carolina (28-15, 6-7 C-USA) scored one run on four hits and committed an error.

Trey Sutton led the Golden Eagles with two hits, including a double, a home run, a walk and two RBIs. James Ewing finished with a hit and an RBI. East Carolina had four players finish with one hit each. Ryan Wood finished with a solo homer in the first inning.

Southern Miss led off the game with a run in the first inning. Sutton doubled down the left field line and scored on James Ewing's single to left center field. East Carolina answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer by Wood.

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Winstead hit a two-out single through the left side, and Brian Dozier singled to right field. Both moved up on a Sasser wild pitch and scored when Sutton reached on a fielding error by first baseman Stephen Batts.

Southern Miss added two more runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 5-1. Dozier reached on a one-out walk and scored on Sutton's two-run homer to right field.

Southern Miss and East Carolina play the third and final game of the Conference USA weekend series at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday at Noon.
