HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Mitch Slauter and Tyler Renfroe each hit two-run homers to lead Mississippi State to a 5-0 non-conference baseball victory over Southern Miss here Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.
The Golden Eagles (23-17) had a three-game winning streak snapped as it was the only meeting between the two schools this season.
Southern Miss was shutout by the Bulldogs (25-16) for the second consecutive time as they were blanked 3-0 in Atlanta last June in the opening game of the NCAA Regional. Southern Miss has not scored against MSU over the last 25 innings, dating back to a four-run second frame at Trustmark Park last season.
Slauter hit his second blast of the campaign in the fourth and Renfroe adding his third home run one inning later to put the game away.
MSU got its first run in the third. With the bases loaded, Daryl Norris hit a ball to Travis Creel at third with the bases loaded. Creel stepped on the bag to get the force out and then threw home but catcher Chase Fowler did not tag the runner as the force was off to allow Adam Frazier to score.
Nick Routt, the second of three Mississippi State pitchers, registered the victory and improved to 2-4 on three innings of work. He allowed no runs on one hit and a walk with a strikeout.
USM starter Boomer Scarborough (1-2) gave up a run on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts over two-plus innings to suffer the loss.
It was the second time the Golden Eagles have been blanked this season. The other time came in a 3-0 loss to Troy back on Feb. 24.
Southern Miss managed six hits in the contest as Kameron Brunty led the way with two singles.
The Golden Eagles return to C-USA play this weekend when they travel to Charleston, W.Va., to face Marshall in a three-game set at Appalachian Power Park. Game times are at 1:05 p.m. CT, on both Friday and Saturday and then at 9:05 a.m. CT, on Sunday.
