HOUSTON, Texas - After Southern Miss tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Rice notched single runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to retake its lead to secure the victory for the day and sweep the weekend series Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park in front of a crowd of 3,318.
Rice (35-9, 14-1 C-USA) scored five runs on seven hits, while Southern Miss (27-15, 5-7 C-USA) scored three runs on six hits and committed three errors.
Bobby Bramhall (4-1) earned the win for the Owls, pitching two innings, giving up two runs on three hits while walking three. Patrick Ezell (1-3) took the loss for the Golden Eagles, pitching one inning, giving up one run on two hits while walking two.
Rice was led offensively by Greg Buchanan who had two hits and one RBI and Joe Savery added two RBIs.
Rice took a 1-0 lead behind Aaron Luna's solo home run in the second inning.
The Owls tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to build their lead to 3-0. Buchanan singled and stole second, and Brian Friday walked, to set up Joe Savery who hit a two-run RBI double to score both Buchanan and Friday.
Southern Miss scored its first run of the game to cut the lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning. Sutton led off with a single to right field, moved to third on Johnson's single through the right side and scored on Marc Maddox's sacrifice fly.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 3-3 when they scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Jody Blount walked and was brought home on Sutton's RBI double to right center field for the first run of the inning. With Sutton at second, Johnson hit an RBI single to right field to score Sutton and tie the game at 3-3.
Rice scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to retake the lead, 4-3. Josh Rodriguez led off with a single, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Travis Reagan's sacrifice fly.
The Owls added one run to their lead to make the score 5-3 in the eighth inning. Jordan Dodson was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout bunt by Danny Lehmann, advanced to third on a groundout by Tyler Henley and scored on an RBI single by Buchanan.
Southern Miss next returns home to host in-state rival Mississippi State in a two-game mid-week series on April 25 and 26. Both Tuesday and Wednesday's games will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
