HOUSTON, Texas - Rice scored three runs in the seventh inning to stretch a one-run lead into a four run lead en route to a 5-1 victory over Southern Miss, today, at Reckling Park, in front of 3,180 in attendance.
Adam Zornes walked to lead off the inning. Southern Miss closing pitcher Daniel Best was brought in to pitch and struck out Chad Lembeck. Danny Lehmann singled to center and Tyler Henley doubled to right field to drive in pinch runner Derek Myers to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Golden Eagles then brought in Ryan Belanger to pitch. He struck out Greg Buchanan but a wild pitch allowed him to reach and Lehmann to score to increase the lead to 4-1. Henley advanced to third on the wild pitch and scored on a squeeze bunt single by Brian Friday to post the final outcome, 5-1.
Owl starting pitcher Bobby Bell (5-0) earned his fifth win of the season, giving up one run on six hits, walking and striking out six. Cole St. Clair (7) earned his seventh save of the season, pitching the final 2.1 innings, giving up three hits, one walk and striking out three. David Clark (3-2) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching six innings, giving up three runs on five hits, walking two and striking out three batters.
Rice (34-9, 13-1 Conference USA) scored five runs on nine hits, while Southern Miss (27-14, 5-6 C-USA) scored one run on nine hits.
Owl third baseman Josh Rodrigez went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Aaron Luna finished with a hit and two RBIs. Henley and Friday each had one RBI for Rice. Brian Dozier led Southern Miss with three hits, and Toddric Johnson finished with two hits and an RBI.
Southern Miss got on the board first, scoring a run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Jody Blount led off the inning with a hit up the middle, moved to second on Brian Dozier's bunt down the third base line and scored on Toddric Johnson's single up the middle.
Rice took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Greg Buchanan was walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on Josh Rodriguez's single to right field and both scored on Aaron Luna's bloop single just inside the right field line.
Southern Miss and Rice will play the final game of the Conference USA weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
