HOUSTON, Texas - Rice scored six runs in the fifth inning, keyed by a Joe Savery grand slam to right center, to break open a one-run game en route to a 12-3 victory over Southern Miss in the first game of the Conference USA three-game weekend series at Reckling Park, tonight in front of 3,016 in attendance.
Owl pitcher Eddie Degerman (9-0) finished with an outstanding performance on the mound, giving up one run on three hits, walked four and struck out 10 for his ninth win of the season. Scott Massey (5-3) dropped his third decision of the season, giving up seven runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out two.
Rice's Travis Reagan led off the fifth inning with a hit up the middle and then moved to third on Tyler Henley's double down the right field line and both scored on Buchanan's single to center. Brian Friday singled down the left field line and Josh Rodriguez walked to load the bases, before Joe Savery unloaded a 2-2 pitch over the right center field wall for a grand slam to increase the Owl lead to 8-1.
Rice scored 12 runs on 16 hits, while Southern Miss scored three runs on five hits and committed one error. Aaron Luna led the Owls with four hits, two runs scored, two home runs and three RBIs. Joe Savery finished with two hits, including a grand slam and collected five RBIs. Tyler Henley had three hits and Greg Buchanan finished with two hits.
Rice took an early 1-0 in the first inning. Greg Buchanan reached on an infield single to short, moved to second on a balk by Massey and scored on Joe Savey's single to left field. The Owls extended their lead to 2-0 when Aaron Luna hit a solo homer to left center field in the second inning.
Southern Miss broke up Degerman's no-hitter in the fifth inning when Bailey Hartel led off the inning with a single to center. The Golden Eagles also erased the shutout with a single run in the inning as well. Jody Blount reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Trey Sutton reached on a fielder's choice grounder to second base.
Rice extended its lead by a run, 9-1, in the sixth when Henley tripled to left center to lead off the inning and then scored when Friday flew out to center.
The Owls scored three runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 12-1. Adam Zornes walked before Aaron Luna hit his second home run of the game. Then Chad Lembeck hit a solo homer.
Southern Miss scored two runs in the eighth inning to cut the lead to provide the final outcome, 12-3. Trey Sutton led off the inning with a single through the left side, moved to second on a passed ball, moved to third when Maddox hit into a double play and then scored on Michael Ewing's single up the middle. He moved to second when Drew Carson was walked, advanced to third when Trey Cuevas was walked and scored when Bailey Hartel received a bases-loaded walk.
Southern Miss and Rice play the second game of the conference weekend series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
