HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Marc Maddox notched his fourth grand slam of the year along with six RBIs, and Barry Bowden struck out seven batters in five innings, in Southern Miss' 14-1 victory over Alcorn State Wednesday evening at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of a crowd of 3,122.

Southern Miss (27-12) scored 14 runs on 10 hits, while Alcorn State (20-17) scored one run on seven hits. Neither team committed an error during the game.

"Barry threw well tonight," Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "He had an inning where he walked some people, which is what we need to stay away from, but his pitching the last three times out has been good. With that said, we won the game tonight and now we move onto Rice this weekend. Rice has a great club, but we have to go over there and do things right, and it's all going to start on the mound."

Bowden (2-1) earned the win for the Golden Eagles, pitching five innings, allowing five hits, striking out seven and walking three. Darryl Jordan (4-3) took the loss for the visiting Braves, pitching two innings, giving up five runs on two hits and walking five.

Maddox led the Southern Miss offense with two hits, which included one double, one home run and a game-high six RBIs. Michael Ewing and Kevin Coker each added two hits and a home run, with Ewing collecting five RBIs and Coker adding three RBIs.

Marcus Davis and Chris Walker led Alcorn State offensively with two hits, with Walker adding the lone RBI for the Braves.

Southern Miss scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead, 2-0. Johnson reached base on a fielder's choice, advanced to second when Maddox walked and moved to third on a balk which also moved Maddox to second. With runners on second and third, Ewing hit a two-run RBI single that scored both Johnson and Maddox.

The Golden Eagles added three runs when Johnson and Maddox had consecutive walks, before Ewing connected on a three-run shot that sailed over the right field wall to give the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead in the third inning.

Southern Miss poured on five more runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 10-0. Brian Dozier led off with a single up the middle, moved to second when Trey Sutton walked and moved to third when Johnson was walked. With the bases loaded, Maddox hit an RBI double to right field to score Dozier and Sutton and advance Johnson to third to extend the lead to 7-0. With runners on second and third, Kevin Coker slapped a three-run homer to right-center to give the Golden Eagles a 10-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles added four more runs in the fifth inning to bring their lead to 14-0. After Blount singled, Sutton reached on a fielder's choice and Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Maddox responded with his fourth grand slam of the season. That was his 12th home run of the season and also puts him in second place on the school's all-time home runs list with 47.

Alcorn State scored one run in the sixth inning to make the score 14-1. Marcus Davis hit a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Chris Walker's RBI single up the middle for the Braves lone run.

Southern Miss next travels to Houston, Texas, to face Conference USA leader Rice for a weekend series, April 21-23.
