HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Ryan Breen knocked in four runs and D.J. Hicks delivered a two-run home run to lead No. 13 UCF over Southern Miss 12-3 here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles fell to 20-15 overall and 4-5 in Conference USA after losing their first home series since the Rice series last May. UCF improved to 30-8 and 9-3.
After playing three scoreless innings, the Knights exploded for four runs in the fourth off of USM starter Boomer Scarborough (1-1). Breen drove in two runs in the frame with a triple to highlight the scoring.
Scarborough did not get an out in the fourth and suffered the loss in the contest allowing a total of four runs on three hits and two walks, while hitting a batter in the contest.
The Golden Eagles cut into the gap with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Isaac Rodriguez and a RBI fielder's choice by Kameron Brunty. Rodriguez led the Golden Eagles with two of their five hits, finishing the weekend by going 7-of-14 at the plate.
UCF went on to score in each of the three innings score multiple times in each of the frames with Hicks highlighting a three-run seventh with a homer over the right-centerfield wall.
The Golden Eagles got a sacrifice fly by Dillon Day in the bottom of the seventh for their other run.
Knight starter Ray Hanson went 6 2/3 and limited the Eagles to three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday night at South Alabama. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
