Baseball Falls in 11 Innings to Mississippi State

PEARL, Miss.- Derrick Armstrong scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th to lift No. 13 Mississippi State to a 4-3 victory over Southern Miss here Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.

The Golden Eagles (19-15) lost for the sixth-straight time to the Bulldogs and snapping a current two-game winning streak in the process, while MSU improved to 21-13. It was the second extra-inning contest for Southern Miss in 2014, with the club falling to 0-2 in those contests.

Armstrong led the Bulldogs with two hits and scored three of MSU's four runs in the contest.

Armstrong started the Bulldogs first scoring inning in the second with a single. After stealing second, Gavin Collins singled to left and the ball was misplayed by leftfielder Dylan Burdeauxallowing Armstrong to score.

C.T. Bradford then extended the Bulldog lead an inning later with a run-scoring single to make the score 2-0.

Southern Miss, though, tied the game in the fourth. After Michael Sterling and Tim Lynch singled, Mason Robbinsdrove in both runs with an infield single to tie the score.

The Bulldogs then went ahead 3-2 on in the bottom of the frame on a double play ground out by Jake Vickerson.

The Golden Eagles tied the score in the eighth on a RBI single from Matt Durst.

Jonathan Holder threw the final 1 2/3 innings for the Bulldogs, allowing just one hits and fanning three to earned the victory and improve to 3-1 on the year. Four Bulldog pitchers combined to strike out the Golden Eagles 16 times - a season high - in the contest.

USM reliever, Ryan Milton, the third pitcher for the Golden Eagles threw 1 1/3 innings allowing a run on three walks with two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 2-2.

The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they travel to Birmingham to face C-USA leader UAB in a three-game series. The games will be played on campus at Young Memorial Field with the opener taking place at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, before a 2 p.m., Saturday contest and a 1 p.m., single game in the finale on Sunday.
