Baseball Falls, 5-4, To Dallas Baptist In Final Game Of Weekend Series
Patriots hold on to win to avoid the Golden Eagle sweep.

DALLAS, Texas - Trailing 5-4 in the top of the eighth inning, and with two Golden Eagles on base, with Drew Carson at third and Brian Dozier at second facing no outs, Bailey Hartel flied out to left field and Carson left early to force two outs, and Toddric Johnson grounded out to end the Golden Eagles last chance to score with runners on base, as Dallas Baptist forced three consecutive outs in the ninth inning with consecutive strikeouts by Marc Maddox and Michael Ewing, and a flyout by Trey Sutton, to hold on to a one-run victory.
Dallas Baptist (23-12) scored five runs on nine hits and committed one error, while Southern Miss (24-10, 4-2 C-USA) scored four runs on nine hits and committed one error.
Randall Taylor (4-1) received the win for the Patriots, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, striking out five and walking two. Ricky Sparks (3) earned the save, pitching 2.1 innings, striking out four and walking four. Cliff Russum (4-4) took the loss for the Golden Eagles, pitching five innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits, striking out two and walking one. Bryan Adams pitched two innings in relief, striking out two and walking one.
Austin Krum led the Patriot offense with two hits and one run scored, while Damian Gomez added one hit and two RBIs.
The Golden Eagle offense was led by Johnson, who had two hits and two RBIs, while Maddox and Hartel each added two hits with Hartel also chipping in a double.
Southern Miss scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Drew Carson led off with a double to left center field, moved to second on Dozier's sacrifice bun and scored on Hartel's RBI single to left field.
Dallas Baptist answered by scoring all of their runs in the bottom fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Brad Boles reached base on a fielding error by second baseman Hartel, moved to second when Krum bunted down the first base line to reach base and the Patriots loaded the bases on Cody Montgomery's bunt. With no outs, Drew Holder and Evan Bigley hit two consecutive RBI singles, both to left field, that scored Boles and Krum, respectively, and each add a run to the board to take a 2-0 lead. With the bases reloaded, Israel Victor walked to bring in the third run of the inning before Gomez hit a two-run RBI single to left field to bring the total to 5-0.
The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the seventh inning to cut the Patriot lead to 5-4. Carson walked to begin the inning and Hartel doubled to right field to place runners and second and third for Johnson, who hit a two-run RBI single to right field to score both runners. Maddox then walked to move Johnson to second, and a wild pitch by Sparks advanced the runners to second and third for Ewing who was walked to load the bases. Jody Blount next struck out, but reached base on a wild pitch that also allowed Johnson to score Southern Miss' third run of the inning.
Southern Miss next returns home on Tuesday, April 11 to host Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
