Golden Eagles Take Advantage of South Alabama Errors to Rally 3-1

MOBILE, Ala. - Southern Miss took advantage of two South Alabama errors in the eighth to rally for a 3-1 non-conference baseball victory here Wednesday night at Eddie Stanky Field.

The Golden Eagles (17-13) won for the 10th time in the last 13 games, despite being held to just three hits. Southern Miss snapped a five-game losing streak to the Jaguars.

Down 1-0 in the eighth, Chuckie Robinson led off the inning with a single. After a botched fielding attempt by USA starter Jared Gates on a bunt by Nick Dawson to give the Golden Eagles runners at first and second, Breck Kline then put down a put back to reliever Ben Taylor who entered the game to pitch to him.

Taylor dropped the bunt and then first baseman Cole Gleason threw wild of first base allowing both pinch runner Andrew Furr and Dawson to score to give the visitors the lead. Tim Lynch then ended the scoring for Southern Miss with a sacrifice fly.

The Jaguars (13-15) took the early lead by stringing together three singles in the first with the last one from Justin Cullifer which drove in the game's first run of the contest.

USM reliever Jake Winston (2-1) threw allowed just a hit and a walk over an inning to get the win in relief of A.J. Glasshof, who went a career-best 6 2/3 innings, align a run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Bradley Roney retired three of the four batters he faced in the ninth to earn his second save in as many nights and his 10th of the season. He now has 28 career saves which is in second place on the school's career chart.

The Golden Eagles return to action with a three-game Conference USA series at Pete Taylor Park this weekend against Middle Tennessee. The teams start the series with a single game on Friday 6 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m., contest Saturday and a 1:30 p.m., tilt to end the series on Sunday.
