BOCA RATON, Fla. - Tyler Rocklein hit a two-run home run and Drew Jackson kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard until the ninth as Florida Atlantic defeated Southern Miss 3-1 here Sunday afternoon to salvage the final game of the Conference USA series at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (15-13 overall, 6-3 C-USA) saw a four-game winning streak snapped, while FAU improved to 15-12, 4-8 on the season. Southern Miss has now won each of its first three C-USA series to start play this spring.
The Owls, though, pounded out nine hits in the contest including two in the bottom of the third. Mitch Morales started that frame with a one-out single, before Rocklein belted his two-run shot, his first of the season, to left to give the home squad an early 2-0.
FAU added its final run in the fourth on a fielder's choice when the Golden Eagles could not turn a double play, scoring Billy Endris on the play.
FAU starter Drew Jackson limited the Golden Eagles to a run on six hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts to get the victory and improve to 3-0. Jackson had retired 15 of 17 batters heading into the ninth, before Durst led off the frame with a single. After a pair of outs, Jackson gave up consecutive singles to Bradley Roney and Austin Roussel. Roussel's single drove in pinch runner Michael Gilbert for the visitors only run of the game.
The Owls then went to Bo Logan who got Nick Dawson to foul out to end the game. Logan earned his first save of the campaign.
Southern Miss starter Cameron Giannini (2-2) got tagged with the loss after surrendering all three runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.
The Golden Eagles finish their six-game road swing with a pair of midweek games at New Orleans, Tuesday, and at South Alabama, Wednesday. Both games start at 6:30 p.m.
