BOCA RATON, Fla. - Christian Talley and Bradley Roney combined to limit Florida Atlantic to eight hits in a 2-0 Southern Miss shutout in its Conference USA series opener here Friday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Golden Eagles won for the third-straight time to improve to 14-12 overall and 5-2 in C-USA. The squad also won for the seventh time in the last nine games. FAU fell to 14-11, 3-7. The two teams will continue the series Saturday with a 12 noon CT, contest. The game has been moved up three hours due to expected impending weather in the area later in the day.
Talley and Roney fired the first combined shutout for the Golden Eagles since Andrew Pierce and Roney did it against Marshall April 27, 2012, when the Golden Eagles captured a 2-0 victory.
Talley, a junior from Diamondhead, Miss., surrendered seven hits over seven innings of work with a walk and four strikeouts to capture the victory in his second-straight start to improve to 2-1. Roney, who also had two of the Eagles' eight hits in the contest, threw the final two innings - allowing a hit and a walk - with four strikeouts to earn his eighth save of the year.
Roney, a junior from Wetumpka, Ala., now has 26 career saves to move into second place on the school's career chart for that category. He now only trails Collin Cargill, who registered 30 for the Golden Eagles from 2008-2011.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles did not get on the board until the fifth. With two outs and runners on first and second, Michael Sterling laced a ground ball to Mitch Morales, whose throw bounced to first baseman Ricky Santiago and could not be handled allowing Austin Roussel to score from second on the play.
Nick Dawson then drove in the game's other run with a one-out, double down the leftfield line, lining the ball by a pulled in infield in the eighth. Roney, who had been on third base, led off the inning with a single, before moving up on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt by Roussel.
Sophomore Tim Lynch, who hails from nearby Jupiter, Fla., also collected two hits for the Golden Eagles.
