Intrastate Rival Ole Miss Scores Two Runs In The Eighth Inning To Win Seesaw Battle, 9-8, Against Southern Miss
Dozier, Johnson and Maddox each register three hits against Ole Miss.

OXFORD, Miss. - After scoring five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take an 8-7 lead behind a grand slam by Marc Maddox, Ole Miss capitalized in the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded as Chris Coghlan hit a two-RBI single for the Rebels to take away what would have been the Golden Eagles come-from behind victory, 9-8.
Ole Miss (14-11) scored nine runs on 12 hits and committed one error, while Southern Miss (20-7) scored eight runs on 12 hits and committed two errors.
Garrett White (2-0) received the win for the Rebels, pitching two innings, giving up one run on one hit, striking out two and walking one. Daniel Best (2-1) took his first loss of the season, pitching on inning, giving up one run on one hit and walked one.
Justin Henry and C.J. Ketchum each added two hits for Ole Miss, with Ketchum adding an RBI, while Coghlan contributed three RBIs.
Ole Miss scored first with one run in the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. Justin Henry led off with a double to right center field, advanced to third on C. J. Ketchum's sacrifice bunt groundout and scored on Chris Coghlan's fielder's choice.
Southern Miss scored one run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Dozier led off the inning with a single to left field, moved to third on Johnson's single through the right side and scored on a Bo Davis' groundout into a double play.
Ole Miss answered in the bottom of the third with one run to retake the lead, 2-1. Evan Button singled up the middle, advanced to third on Henry's single through the right side and scored on Ketchum's RBI single through the right side.
Southern Miss tied the game for the second time with a run in the fourth inning to make the score 2-2. Maddox led off the inning with a single to first base, moved to third on Trey Sutton's single down the right field line and scored on Dozier's RBI double to third base.
The Rebels retook the lead, 3-2, by scoring one run in the fifth inning. Button singled to right field, advanced to second on Henry's walk, moved to third when Ketchum reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a failed pickoff attempt, throwing error by Barry Bowden.
The Golden Eagles tied the game for the third time in the sixth inning, scoring one run to make the score 3-3. Maddox led off the inning with a single to right field, stole second and scored on Kevin Coker's RBI single to left field.
Ole Miss scored four runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-3 lead. Ketchum singled to right field, advanced to second when Coghlan reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Zack Cozart's RBI single up the middle. Coghlan then scored on Alex Presley's sacrifice bunt groundout that also advanced Cozart to second. With one on, Mark Wright hit a two-run homer to left field.
Southern Miss responded with five runs in the eighth inning to take its first lead of the game, 8-7. Coker was hit by a pitch, moved to second on Dozier's walk, and advanced to third Johnson's single to shortstop. With the bases loaded and no outs, Chris Matesich walked to bring Coker home to score a run. After two consecutive outs consisting of a strikeout by Jody Blount, followed by a foul out by Trey Cuevas, Maddox stepped to the plate to deliver his second grand slam of the season to score Dozier, Johnson and Matesich.
The Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to retake the final lead of the game, 9-8. Justin Brashear singled to center field before Jo Jo Tann came in to pinch run. Tann advanced to second on Logan Power's sacrifice bunt groundout, followed by a walk by Henry and Ketchum loaded the bases when he reached on a fielder's error by Maddox. With the bases loaded, Coghlan hit a two-RBI single to left field to score Tann and Henry.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend, Mar. 31 through Apr. 2, to host Memphis at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
