HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Geoffrey Thomas threw a one-hitter and the Golden Eagles scored in every inning as No. 25 Southern Miss defeated No. 23 Tulane 12-0 in seven innings to win its Conference USA season-opening series here Sunday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (18-5 overall, 2-1 C-USA) scored in double digits for the fourth-straight time as they defeated Tulane two games to one in scoring 43 runs over the three-game set.
"That's as solid a pitching performance as I've seen since I've been at Southern Miss," Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. "He dominated every at-bat of the game, using his fastball, which not only had good movement, but late movement."
Thomas recorded his second consecutive complete game and the first complete-game shutout this season for the Golden Eagles.
The sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., allowed just a bunt single to Matt Ryan in the fourth inning and a pair of walks as he threw to two batters over the minimum in the seven-inning shutout. He tied a season high with six strikeouts and retired the last 10 batters he faced.
"Coach Berry told us yesterday `It's not how you lost yesterday, it's how you bounce back,'" Thomas said. "I think down to the man we took that to heart and came out here and gave it everything we had today."
Over his last two starts, Thomas has retired the last 38-of-44 batters as he lowered his earned run average to 1.33 and improved to 5-1 on the season.
The Golden Eagles collected 13 hits as Tyler Koelling collected a pair of two-run doubles as he finished with four RBI. B.A. Vollmuth, Marc Bourgeois, Adam Doleac and Mark Ellis all added two hits in the Golden Eagle attack.
Tulane starter Robby Broach (1-1) was chased from the game after three-plus innings as he allowed nine runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The Green Wave (18-6, 1-2) also committed three errors in the contest.
Southern Miss concludes its five-game homestand Wednesday night when they entertain Ole Miss. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
