BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southern Miss dropped the first game but rebounded with a 14-3 mercy rule win in the nightcap to split the doubleheader in Birmingham Saturday.
"I am very proud of the outing that Jay Myrick gave us in the second game," head coach Scott Berry said. "I thought we swung the bats extremely well in game two, I hate that we dropped the first two games but winning the third game was huge, you just cannot get swept in a series."
Southern Miss used five pitchers in game one, allowing 13 runs and walking 11, falling to UAB 13-8.
Game two saw true freshman Jay Myrick pick up his first collegiate win and Southern Miss blast five home runs in a 14-3 seven inning mercy rule victory.

Southern Miss 14, UAB 3
Southern Miss scored 11 runs in their first three at bats and freshman Jay Myrick was outstanding is his first collegiate start leading Southern Miss to a 14-3 win.
Coming into the game tonight Myrick had thrown only 2.2 innings on the season. He worked 5.1 innings tonight, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four.
The Golden Eagles pounded out 18 hits, including five home runs, one of which was a grand slam hit by Taylor Walker.
Adam Doleac and Mark Ellis each had three hits a piece to lead the offense.
Southern Miss jumped out to the early lead in game two of the double dip as B.A. Vollmuth hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning. For Vollmuth it was his fourth home run of the season.
UAB started their half of the first with three consecutive singles and Luke Stewart picked up the first RBI of the game as he drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game. With no one out and the bases loaded Myrick issued the walk to Stewart but then pitched out of the jam without allowing any additional runs.
The Golden Eagles added two runs in the top of the second as Mark Ellis led off with a double and came around to score on an Anthony Doss groundout then Travis Graves hit his second home run of the weekend, a solo shot to left center field.
Southern Miss scored for the third consecutive inning as Ellis ripped a single through the right side knocking in Vollmuth who singled to start the inning. Ellis' single ended the day for the UAB starter Shay Crawford.
Anthony Doss and Travis Graves greeted the new UAB pitcher Ryan Wooley with back-to-back RBI singles before he walked Tyler Koelling to load the bases.
Taylor Walker quickly emptied the bases as he blasted a grand slam over the center field wall to put Southern Miss up 10-1. Southern Miss added their eighth run of the inning as Joey Archer singled to centerfield.
Mark Ellis joined the home run parade to lead off the top of the sixth inning as he hit his second home run of the season, a towering solo shot over the centerfield wall.
UAB's Adam Manning added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 12-3
For the second consecutive inning Southern Miss led off an inning with a home run as Kameron Brunty led off the top of the seventh with a solo shot deep over the right field wall to put Southern Miss back up by 10.
Vollmuth added in his second RBI of the game with a RBI single to make the score 14-3.

Southern Miss managed only one hit through the first five innings and three different Golden Eagle pitchers surrendered four earned runs as UAB took game one 13-8.
Freshman Geoffrey Thomas lasted only 1.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits in his fifth start of the season. Seth Hester worked 3.1 innings allowing four runs on three hits and walked four.
Junior Ryan MacNamara faced only five batters, allowing one hits and three walks, with all four base runners scoring.
Adam Doleac led the Southern Miss offense with two hits, including a two run home run, two RBI and two runs scored. He also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
UAB stuck early for the second game in a row as Luke Stewart drew a bases loaded walk for the games first run but Thomas was able to pitch out of further trouble with a ground ball double play, holding to the Blazers to one run.
Southern Miss took their first lead of the series in the top of the second as Adam Doleac singled and both B.A. Vollmuth and Joey Archer drew walks to load the bases with no one out. Freshman Dillon Day picked up his second RBI of the year on a sacrifice fly scoring Doleac and Vollmuth came in to score on a balk.
UAB answered right back in the bottom of the second with three runs, keyed by Jamal Austin's RBI single, Nick Crawford's RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Merritt, ending the day for Thomas on the mound.
The Blazers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI groundout by Frost, his second RBI of the game and a Hester wild pitch which allowed Crawford to scamper home from third. The rally continued as Andrew Manning hit a two-run home run to put UAB on top 8-2.

UAB answered once again as Ryan MacNamara loaded the bases then issued a walk to Harry Clark forcing in a run and Jamal Austin singled home two more runs before Merritt added a RBI with a single off reliever Matt Warren.
The Blazers scored their 13th run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a bases loaded RBI fielder's choice hit by Bradley Hicks.
Southern Miss added a single run in the top of the eight as Taylor Walker picked up his third RBI of the day on a groundout to plate Travis Graves and make the score 13-8.
