BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southern Miss pitcher Cliff Russum threw a seven-inning complete-game one-hitter, giving up one unearned run, walking three and striking out six batters to lead the Golden Eagles to a 12-1 victory over UAB, today, to complete the Conference USA season-opening series sweep, at Young Memorial Field in front of 400 in attendance.
The game was stopped after seven innings due the conference 10-run rule on Sunday. This marked the first conference road series-opening sweep since the Golden Eagles swept Memphis in 1997.
Russum (4-2) gave up his first hit with one-out in the seventh inning to Zac Ward ,when he hit a grounder that glanced off of Russum's leg. Before the hit, Russum retired 10 straight batters back to the fourth inning, when the first runner reached on a fielding error by Golden Eagle left fielder Luke Adkins. Russum started the game with two-straight outs before walking two batters and then getting the ground out to close out the inning. He retired the side in the second and third inning.
Southern Miss (20-6, 3-0 Conference USA) scored 12 runs on 11 hits and committed one error, while UAB (13-11, 0-3 C-USA) scored one run on one hit and committed one error.
UAB starter Jim Crew (3-1) took his first loss of the season, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, walking four and striking out four.
The game was scoreless until Southern Miss struck for three runs in the fourth inning. Back-to-back hits by Marc Maddox and Jody Blount, put runners on first and third. A wild pitch scored Maddox and a ground out by Coker scored Blount. David Steele was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Dozier's single to left center.
Southern Miss scored three more in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 6-0. Dozier had a sacrifice fly to drive in the first runs, Toddric Johnson singled to left to drive in the second run and Sutton drove in the third run of the inning.
UAB scored its only run in the fourth inning when Danny Sawyer reached second on the fielding error by Adkins, moved to third when Billy Lichtner flew out to left field and scored when Ward grounded out to short.
The Golden Eagles exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to push their lead to 12-1. A three-run homer by Trey Cuevas, an RBI single by Adkins, a bases loaded walk to Maddox and a ground out by Blount accounted for all six of Southern Miss' runs in that inning.
Southern Miss travels to Oxford, Miss., on Tuesday, March 28, for a 6:30 p.m., contest against Ole Miss. The Golden Eagles return home to host Memphis in a three-game Conference USA weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field as part of Eaglefest Weekend. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 4 p.m., and Sunday's game at 1 p.m.
