BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss offense scored four runs in the seventh inning to lead the Golden Eagles to a 7-4 come-from-behind victory over UAB, today, in the second game of the three-game Conference USA weekend series at Young Memorial Field in front of 400 in attendance.

"The players showed a lot of resolve today," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "UAB really battled us and had a two-run lead into the seventh inning. We got some players on base and then we were able to take advantage of the UAB error. We got some more hits, and Marc hit a big home run in the eighth inning. I thought David pitched pretty well for his first conference outing. Brad and Daniel did a good job of shutting the door once we put them into the game. We need to come out and play well tomorrow so we can end this series on a good note."

Down 4-2 in the seventh, the Golden Eagles scored four runs on three hits and took advantage of a big UAB error to take the 6-4 lead. Marc Maddox blasted his seventh home run of the season to left center to stake Southern Miss a 7-4 lead, the final outcome.

Luke Adkins was walked to lead off the seventh inning, moved to second on Jody Blount's single on the right field line, advanced to third when Maddox was walked and he and Blount scored when Trey Cuevas hit a ground ball to shortstop Ryan Metcalf, who misplayed the ball. Trey Sutton reached on a fielder's choice, plating Maddox. Drew Carson doubled down the left field line and Coker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brian Dozier singled down the right field line to score Sutton for the fourth run of the inning.

Brad Owen (2-0) came on in relief of starter David Clark in the sixth inning and picked up his second win, pitching two innings, giving up two hits and striking out one. Daniel Best (7) picked up his seventh save of the season, pitching the final 1.1 innings, giving up a hit. Clark pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, walking four and striking out three.

UAB starter Lyle Northington pitched six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out one. Mitch Thorn (2-2) came on in the seventh inning and gave up four runs, three earned on one hit and walked two, dropping his second decision of the season.

Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Toddric Johnson led off with a single to right field, moved to second when Bo Davis moved him on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on Jody Blount's single up the middle.

UAB scored two in the second inning to take the 2-1 lead. Billy Lichtner led off with a single through the right side, moved to second when Zac Ward was hit by a pitch, moved to third when Metcalf reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Jorge Gutierrez's infield single that hit off the hand of pitcher David Clark. Metcalf moved to third when Steven Turner was walked and scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning. Bo Davis led off the inning with a triple to left center and scored when Blount grounded out to second.

The Blazers scored two in the fifth inning to take the 4-2 lead. Levi Patmon led off with a single to right field, moved to second on Phillip Bell's sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Danny Sawyer was walked before Lichtner's double to left center, cleaned the bases sending both Patmon and Sawyer to the plate.

Southern Miss and UAB play the third and final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m., at Young Memorial Field.
