Rice Evens Series with 5-3 win over Golden Eagles In Game Two of Weekend Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Rice scored a run in the sixth inning, three more in the seventh, added an insurance run in the ninth, and Bobby Bramhall struck out six batters in the last 4.1 innings to lead the No. 7 Owls to a 5-3 win, today, over Southern Miss in front of the 4,286 in attendance, the 13th-biggest crowd in Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field history.
Down 4-1 in the seventh inning, Southern Miss' Trey Cuevas connected on a two-run homer to left center field to pull the Golden Eagles within a run, 4-3.
Rice (18-8, 1-1 Conference USA) finished with five runs on eight hits and committed an error, while Southern Miss (17-7, 1-1 C-USA) scored three runs on six hits and committed an error. The Golden Eagles stranded 11 runners, while the Owls left seven runners on base.
Barry Bowden (1-3) dropped his third decision of the season, pitching six innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits, walking three and striking out six. He retired seven-straight batters before giving up a one-out double to left center by Diego Seastrunk before retiring seven more batters before giving up a walk to Aaron Luna in the fifth inning.
Rice starting pitcher Matt Langwell pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits, walking four and striking out two batters.
JR Ballinger came on in relief of Bowden in the seventh inning, pitching one-third of an inning, giving up an unearned run on one hit and walking one. Patrick Ezell came on in relief in the seventh inning and pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out two batters.
Luke Adkins singled through the right side with one out in the fourth inning, advanced to second when Bo Davis reached on a fielding error by Rice third baseman Diego Seastrunk and then scored on Eddie Burgers' single to center field.
The Owls scored a run in the sixth inning to tie the game. Brian Friday reached on a one-out walk, moved to second when Jared Gayhart was walked, advanced to third when Tyler Henley grounded out to first base and scored on a wild pitch from Bowden.
Rice scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the 4-1 lead. Jordan Dodson singled up the middle and moved to second on Jess Buenger's single through the left side. Both runners moved up a base when Luna grounded out to the pitcher on a sacrifice. Seastrunk reached on a throwing error by Southern Miss third baseman James Ewing to load the bases. Danny Lehman singled to right field to score Dodson, Friday walked to score pinch runner Derek Myers and Gayhart flew out to left field to plate Seastrunk from third base for the third run of the inning.
Friday doubled down the left field line with two outs in the ninth inning and scored on Gayhart's single to left field.
Southern Miss and Rice play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
