Massey Pitches Golden Eagles To 8-2 Win Over UAB In Conference USA Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior Scott Massey (5-0) earned his fifth-straight win of the season, pitching eight strong innings, giving up two runs, one earned on six hits, walking two and striking out five to lead the Golden Eagles to an 8-2 win over UAB in the Conference USA series opener at Young Memorial Field, tonight, in front of 250 in attendance.

Southern Miss (18-6, 1-0 C-USA) scored eight runs on 12 hits and committed two errors, while UAB (13-9, 0-1 C-USA) scored two runs on seven hits.

Luke Adkins, Trey Sutton, Marc Maddox and Kevin Coker led the Golden Eagles with two hits each. Maddox finished with two RBIs and Adkins, Toddric Johnson, Jody Blount, Michael Ewing, David Steele and Coker each finished with one. Levi Patmon finished with two hits and one RBI to lead the Blazers.

Starter Heath Tapscott (2-2) took the loss for the Blazers, pitching four innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits, walking four and striking out two. Derek Hanks came on in relief in the fifth inning, pitching three scoreless innings on three hits and striking out two, and Grant Addison finished the game, pitching the final two innings, striking out two.

Adkins walked to lead off the third inning, moved to third on Sutton's single through the right side and scored on Blount's ground out to second to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead.

Southern Miss added three more runs in the fourth inning to take an 4-0 lead. Maddox led off the inning with a single to right center, moved to second on Steele's single to left field and scored on Coker's single through the right side. Steele moved to second on Coker's single, advanced to third on Brian Dozier's sacrifice bunt to the pitcher and scored on Adkins' single to left field. Adkins scored when Johnson reached on an infield single to second.

The Golden Eagles broke open the game in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take an 8-0 lead. Sutton led off the inning with a single to center, advanced to second when Blount was walked and scored on Ewing's single up the middle. Maddox tripled down the right field line to plate Blount and Ewing and scored when Steele flew out to left field.

UAB scored its two runs in the fifth inning to provide the final outcome, 8-2. Jorge Gutierrez hit a one-out single to left field, moved to third on Steven Turner's double to left center and scored when Patmon flew out to center. Turner moved to third when Patmon flew out to center and scored on a passed ball by Coker.

Southern Miss and UAB play the second game of the three-game Conference USA weekend series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Sunday's game three of the series will begin at 1 p.m.
