Southern Miss Downs Louisiana-Monroe, 9-5, in Midweek Contest

PEARL, Miss. - Michael Ewing finished with three hits and three RBIs, Trey Sutton had two hits and Chance Harst had one hit and three RBIs to lead No. 28 Southern Miss to a 9-5 victory, tonight, over Louisiana-Monroe at Trustmark Park in front of 976 in attendance.

"I thought we hit the ball well tonight and got some key hits," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "We seemed to hit the ball early and score some runs which put more pressure on their pitching staff. I thought Todd pitched well tonight and seemed to have his good stuff. We now have to turn our attention and get ready for a very good Rice team coming to "The Pete" this weekend."

Todd McInnis (4-1) earned his fourth win of the season, pitching 3.0 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out four batters. The coaching staff determined that they were pitching several pitchers tonight so he didn't have to go the full five innings to earn the win. Jared Cavenaugh pitched 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, walking two and striking out two batters. JR Ballinger pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two hits and striking out one batter. Patrick Ezell finished the game, pitching the final inning and striking out one.

Warhawk starter Kye Wilson (2-1) was credited with the loss, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, two walks and striking out four.

Southern Miss (16-6) finished with nine runs on nine hits, while Louisiana-Monroe (14-7) finished with five runs on eight hits and committed two errors.

Louisiana-Monroe was led by Dexter Fontenot and Kyle Suire, both who finished with two hits and one RBI.

Michael Ewing hit a two-out single to right field in the third inning to drive in Trey Sutton and Brian Dozier, giving Southern Miss an early 2-0 lead.

Luke Adkins advanced to third on a fielding error by Warhawk centerfielder Andy Jones, when he dropped the catch. Bailey Hartel singled through the left side to plate Adkins to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Southern Miss struck for six runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead. Dozier was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, James Ewing reached on an infield single to third and both runner advanced a base on a wild pitch from D.J. Fortenberry. Michael Ewing singled to left center to drive in Dozier. Trey Cuevas was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Adkins walked to bring in James Ewing. Hartel was hit by a pitch to bring in Michael Ewing. Chance Harst doubled to deep center field to bring in Cuevas, Adkins and Hartel.

Louisiana-Monroe dented the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Clark LaBorde reached on a one-out walk, moved to third on a single to right center by Ty Rollinson and scored when Ben Soignier flew out to center.

The Warhawks scored four runs in the eighth inning to cut the Southern Miss to 9-5, the final outcome. Brent Smith reached on a one-out walk and scored on Bo Bowman's triple to right field. Fontenot tripled to right center to plate Bowman for the second run of the inning. A.J. Siggers walked before Suire singled through the left side to drive in Fontenot, and Josh Morrison singled over second base to score Siggers.

Southern Miss comes home to open Conference USA action hosting Rice at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field for a three-game weekend series on March 23-25. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game begins at 3 p.m. and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
