HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Carrying a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, Southern Miss added three runs in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth to seal a 6-1 victory and the series sweep of Troy in front of 2,950 in attendance.
Southern Miss (16-5) scored six runs on eight hits and committed three errors, while Troy (12-9) scored one run on 10 hits and committed two errors.
Russum (3-2) received the win for the Golden Eagles, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits, striking out three and walking two. Joe Hallahan (1-2) took the loss for the Trojans, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, striking out four and walking five.
"This was Cliff's best outing of the year," Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "He pitched well by mixing up his pitches and kept them off balance. That was a big lift for him to beat a good team like Troy. It was a good day for him and for us as we got some timely hits late in the game to score some runs."
The Golden Eagle offense was led by Brian Dozier, who had three hits, one stolen base and an RBI. Toddric Johnson collected two hits, one stolen base, one home run and an RBI, and Bo Davis added a two-RBI single.
The Trojan offense was led by Blake Green's three hits. Mike Felix and Edgar Ramirez each added two hits.
Southern Miss scored one run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Johnson led off the inning with a solo shot to left center field.
Southern Miss added three runs to build a 4-0 lead. Marc Maddox walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trey Sutton, stole third base and scored on Dozier's RBI single to center field. Dozier advanced to third on Johnson's single to right field. With runners on first and third, Davis hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Dozier and Johnson.
Troy scored one run in the eight inning to cut the lead to 4-1. Josh Dew led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a single by Felix, moved to third on Jared Keel's bunt and continued home on a throwing error by pitcher Matt Caire.
Southern Miss added two final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend its lead to 6-1. Kevin Coker led off with a single through the left side, moved to second on a balk and scored on Sutton's RBI single to right field. Sutton moved to second on Dozier's single to left field and advanced to third on Johnson's fly out to right field. With the bases loaded, Jody Blount was hit by a pitch to bring home Sutton.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday, March 21, when it hosts South Alabama. First pitch is set for a 6:30 p.m. start at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
