HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss collected a season-high for runs and hits as the Golden Eagles defeated ULM 18-2 here Tuesday night in non-conference baseball action at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Southern Miss (10-11) won for the third time in the last four games and swept the season series with the Warhawks (7-15) by outscoring them 32-4 in the two-game series. ULM lost for the ninth-straight time.
The Golden Eagles got three hits apiece from Michael Sterling, Tim Lynch, Mason Robbins and Dylan Burdeaux to pace the 17-hit Southern Miss attack, while Connor Barron and Matt Durst added two apiece.
"I thought really the key too was we had some big backside, opposite field type hits," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "That we could've easily grounded ourselves out pull side, but we went with the pitch tonight and that's probably the best we've really hit throughout the entire game (this year)."
Robbins drove in a career-best tying five runs, while Lynch and Durst knocked in three each.
The team collected three home runs in the contest for the second time in the last three games. Durst registered his team-high third round-tripper with a two-run shot in the fourth, while Burdeaux, a native of West Monroe, La., collected his first career shot, a solo homer, in the fifth. Robbins added a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to cap the game's scoring with the school's first homer of that variety since Blake Brown did it against UAB on April 27, 2013.
Southern Miss scored in five different innings, including six-run frames in the fourth and eighth stanzas.
Along with the hit total, the Golden Eagles also were hit by pitch a school-record eight times and were walked five additional times in the contest.
Southern Miss starter Cody Carroll (1-0) threw five strong innings for the Golden Eagles allowing just a run on four hits with a walk and a career-high five strikeouts to get the victory.
ULM starter Jared Dye allowed three runs on just one hit with three walks and two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they entertain UTSA in a three-game Conference USA series. Game times are 6 p.m., Friday, 2 p.m., Saturday, and 1 p.m., on Sunday.
