HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Golden Eagle baseball team rallied to tie the game, before Jody Blount scored the game-winning run on a fielding error by Troy left fielder Mike Felix in the 11th inning.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 15-5, while Troy falls to 12-8.
"It was a good come from behind win," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "I thought every pitcher that threw well today. Troy has a good baseball team and it was a good win for us today."
Troy opened the game with a run in the top of the first, as Ian Craze walked to start the inning, advancing to second on a one-out single by Edgar Ramirez, before scoring on a two-out RBI single by Clint Robinson.
Southern Miss tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth. With one out, Trey Cuevas and Kevin Coker were each hit by a pitch, before Cuevas was thrown out at home on a single to left by Brian Dozier, that advanced Coker to third. Coker then scored on a RBI single by Trey Sutton.
Troy loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but Matt Carie struck out Nick Smith before getting Blake Green to line into a double play to escape damage.
The Trojans again left a pair of runners stranded in the sixth, before taking a 2-1 advantage in the eighth, as pinch runner Jared Keel scored on a fielding error by Blount in right field.
But Southern Miss knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, as Blount singled through the right side to start the inning. Then with one out, pinch hitter David Steele singled to left, as Blount went to third on fielding error in left by Felix. Coker then reached on a fielder's choice, as Blount scored on a fielding error by Troy first baseman Clint Robinson, to send the game into extra innings.
In the 11th, Blount singled to third base to open the frame, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bo Davis. After Drew Carson walked, Kevin Coker singled to left, advancing to second on a fielding error by Felix, which allowed Blount to score the game-winning run.
Daniel Best (2-0) got the win, pitching the final four innings, allowing one hit, while striking out seven.
Pete Van Horn (0-2) took the loss, pitching the final 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, walking one and striking out one.
Blount finished with a team-high two runs and two hits for Southern Miss.
Robinson had a game-high three hits for Troy.
The series finale is set for 1 p.m., on Sunday.
