MOBILE, Ala. - Jeff Cunningham's bases-loaded triple to right center in the fifth inning erased a one-run deficit and led South Alabama to a 10-8 win over Southern Miss, tonight, at Stanky Stadium in front of 878 in attendance.
Southern Miss was leading 8-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Jaguars struck for five runs to post the final outcome. Bunky Kateon led off with an infield single to third base, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Joel Collins two-run homer to left field. Ryne Jernigan reached on a one-out single through the left side, Ray Kruml singled through the left side and David Doss walked before Cunningham cleared the bases.
Stephen Boyd (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season in relief, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, walking two and striking out two. Brett Turner came on in relief of Boyd in the seventh inning and held the Golden Eagles to one hit and one walk over the next 2.2 innings before Chris LeGrow (5) finished the final inning, striking out the side.
Jordan King (1-1) was credited with the loss, pitching two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one. Mike Cashion pitched the final 3.1 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and struck out one.
South Alabama (12-7) scored 10 runs on 13 hits, while Southern Miss (12-6) scored eight runs on 11 hits. The Golden Eagles left 12 runners on base, while the Jaguars stranded eight base runners.
Brian Dozier led the Golden Eagles with three hits and two RBIs, and Trey Cuevas finished with two hits and two RBIs. South Alabama was led by Cunningham, who finished with two hits and four RBIs, Joel Collins collected three hits and two RBIs and Ray Kruml had two hits.
Southern Miss took an early 1-0 lead on a single by Trey Cuevas, scoring Brian Dozier in the first inning.
South Alabama answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Eric Shortell singled up the middle on a 3-0 pitch to drive in two runs.
Southern Miss added a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Trey Sutton and Brian Dozier had back-to-back two-out singles to drive in Chance Harst and Chris Matesich, who both reached on walks.
The Golden Eagles scored two more runs in the third inning to extend their lead to 5-2. A solo homer to left field by Trey Cuevas and an RBI single up the middle by Harst scored Bo Davis.
Southern Miss scored two more runs in the fourth inning to push its lead to 7-2. Jody Blount flew out to center with the bases loaded to plate Sutton, and Jeremy Davis singled through the left side to score Brian Dozier.
The Jaguars scored three runs in the fourth inning to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 7-5. Clint Toomey flew out to left field to score Bill Kleinschrodt, David Doss singled to left field to score Daw and Jeff Cunningham singled to right field to plate Kruml for the third run of the inning.
Southern Miss scored a single run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 8-5. Harst walked to lead off the inning, moved to third on Matesich's single to right field and scored on Dozier's ground out to short.
The Golden Eagles host Kent State for a three-game weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's begins at 1 p.m., and Sunday's start is slated for Noon.
