HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Ty Summerlin finished with three hits, including a home run, and brother, Casey, finished with two hits and three RBIs to lead Southeastern Louisiana to a 6-2 win over Southern Miss, tonight, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 3,108 in attendance.
Ryan Collins (1-0) came on in relief of Lion starting pitcher Phil White in the second inning and earned the win, pitching three innings, giving up one run on three hits and striking out three. Andrew Velez pitched two innings, giving up one hit and one walk, Robert Rugg pitched two innings, giving up one walk and striking out three and Chris Province pitched the final inning, giving up two hits and striking out one.
Todd McInnis (3-1) dropped his first decision of the season, giving up four runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out two.
Southeastern Louisiana (14-5) scored six runs on 13 hits and committed two errors, while Southern Miss scored two runs on eight hits.
Trey Cuevas led the Golden Eagles with three hits, including a double and a home run and a RBI. Michael Ewing and Bo Davis each finished with two hits. For SLU, Richard Imhoff and Chase Burch finished with two hits.
The Golden Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. James Ewing hit a two-out single through the left side and scored on Trey Cuevas single to left field.
The Lions tied the game in the second inning on Ty Summerlin's homer to right center.
SLU's Richard Imhoff hit a one-out single to center, advanced to second and third on wild pitches from McInnis and scored on Dillon Suddeth's single through the left side to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.
Southeastern Louisiana added to their lead in the fourth inning when they scored two runs. A two-out double by Casey Summerlin drove in Bryan Frichter and Matthew Schexneyder.
Trey Cuevas hit a solo homer to left field in the fourth inning to pull the Golden Eagles within two runs, 4-2.
The Lions scored another run in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-2. Ty Summerlin hit a one-out single up the middle, moved to second when Schexneyder was hit by a pitch and scored when Casey Summerlin singled to center.
Chase Burch hit a solo homer to left field in the ninth inning to provide the final outcome, 6-2.
Southern Miss faces South Alabama on Wednesday, March 14, in Mobile, Ala., in Stanky Field at 6:30 p.m.
