Errors Cost Baseball Eagles in 5-1 Loss to South Alabama
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - South Alabama took advantage of five Southern Miss errors to defeat the Golden Eagles 5-1 in non-conference baseball action here Wednesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Davis Knapp had two hits and drove in three runs to lead the Jaguars (9-7), while the Golden Eagles were limited to three hits in the contest.
Southern Miss, though, took the early advantage in the third. After a leadoff walk to Austin Roussel and a lineout, Breck Kline's groundout moved Roussel to second before he scored a batter later on a Nick Dawson single to center.
Hayden Jones put the visitors up for good in the fifth with a two-run single, as USA took advantage of a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt earlier in the frame. Another error on a failed pickoff attempt in the seventh at second base lead to the Jaguars' third run as Knapp delivered knocked in that run with a sacrifice fly. Knapp then drove home the final two tallies in the ninth as both runs reached on a leadoff walk and an error on a sacrifice bunt.
The Golden Eagles (7-10) surrendered just one earned run in the game from five different pitchers, but got a solid season debut from sophomore Cody Carroll, who made his first collegiate start. Carroll gave up no runs on just two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
USA starter Matt Bell limited the Golden Eagles to just a run on two hits over 6 1/3 innings with a pair of walks and four strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 2-2. Brandon Hallford retired the final five batters of the game and got three strikeouts to earn his fourth save of the year.
The Golden Eagles now take to the road to open Conference USA play at Marshall this weekend. Game times are 3:05 p.m., CT on both Friday and Saturday, while the Sunday game is slated for 10:05 a.m., CT. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
